After 40 years of age, are likely to become pregnant naturally just 6% in each menstrual cycle, said Dr. Isidoro Bruna, director medical of HM Fertility Center and member of the directive Board of the Spanish society of fertility. The expert added that the odds of pregnancy per cycle are 25% in a 25-year-old woman, and are reduced to 12% when it comes to the 35.
In 2016 116.688 cycles of in vitro fertilization were carried out in Spain, and the average age of the patients was 38-year-old
In Spain, women have their first child at an average age of 32.4 years and, as explained by Dr. Bruna, the number of babies whose mothers are over the age of 40 has tripled since 2000. In fact, clinics specializing in assisted reproduction techniques have seen increased demand for fertility treatments since the 1980s, the past 2016 116.688 cycles of in vitro fertilization were held in our country, and the average age of the patients was 38-year-old.
According to the Spanish society of fertility, in 2016 born in Spain 33.863 children (7.91% of a total of 419.109) thanks to assisted reproductive therapies. Although these treatments are applied with an age limit which, in the case of HM Fertility Center, is located in the 48 years of age, to prevent possible risks, both for the mother to the baby.
HM fertility experts recommend, in addition, from a donor egg to be used if the woman who wants to be a mother has 42 years or older, since in this way the success rate is increased by embryo transfer 60%, compared with only 15% which is achieved when the oocytes of the patients of that age are employed. Another option, they point out, is the vitrification of eggs while the woman is young, for later use when you decide that it is time to have a child.
